After months of ARGs and false starts and endless teases, Blizzard formally announced Overwatch's newest character Sombra on the first day of BlizzCon 2016. Sombra is - as leaks had confirmed - a hacker extraordinaire, who can shut down enemy powers, disable health packs, turn invisible, and is going to ruin EVERYONE'S team comp's for the first couple weeks after she comes out since EVERYONE'S gonna wanna play as her.
Sombra's announcement came with one of Blizzard's trademark animated shorts, involving Sombra and the rest of Overwatch Team Rocket (aka "Talon") infiltrating Volskaya Industries to take out its CEO:
...and one of the major takeaways from the short was the disarming "Boop!" and l'il nose-touch that Sombra pulls out right after menacingly blackmailing Volskaya's CEO into subservience. It was weird, funny, and totally unexpected - and fans have been going nuts over it.
What a great moment! That alone says so much about Sombra as a character, right? How she uses cutesy little gestures to terrify her enemies, how she doesn't fit into the traditional mannerisms of a villain (hi Reaper!), and how she REALLY knows the right way to leave an impression...
But, of course, we were wrong about that - because it actually says SO MUCH MORE THAN WE THOUGHT.
Ya see, Blizzard is really good at this stuff. Like, really REALLY good - they don't include anything on a larf. Everything has meaning and substance, every nook and cranny of every short is packed to the gills with information and fun details to take in, and Sombra's was no different - and a tiny, blink-and-you'll-miss-it clue tells the full story of "The Boop" (first noticed by eagle-eyed redditor Bravae):
After Sombra revealed to Mrs. Volskaya that she knows about her secret AND has the photos to boot (the secret being that Volskaya has been getting its tech from the Omnics, the robot menace humanity once battled with and caused the formation of Overwatch), she wants to twist the knife - and pulls out a picture of Volskaya's young daughter, to remind her that the ensuing public outcry would - at the very least - destroy the family that Volskaya holds dear.
But wait - back up a sec - there were actually TWO pictures of Volskaya's daughter on that desk. What was the other one?
See, Sombra REALLY knows how to twist the knife - not only has her hacking skills gotten her access to the darkest secrets of Mrs. Volskaya, but Sombra's also gained intimate knowledge of her most personal, most vulnerable weakness: her daughter.
But it's the "Boop" that really shows the entire terrifying implications of Sombra's intimidation effort - see, maybe she could have noticed the picture on the desk and known that Volskaya likes to playfully touch her daughter's nose. Maybe. But she knows that she says "Boop" when she does it...because Sombra has been spying on Volskaya and her daughter's personal life.
Sombra isn't only threatening that the people of Russia's wrath will destroy Volskaya and ruin her daughter's life because of Volskaya's professional indiscretions - Sombra's telling her that she personally knows how to get to Volksaya's daughter, because she's already done it. She's been able to infiltrate not only her company, but her home.
And that's why a cutesy "Boop!" is actually the most bone-chilling moment in all of Overwatch.
