Sega Games Co. / Facebook

The Sonic fandom has always been a big, weird, diverse group that genuinely defies simple characterization, beyond the fact that they are extremely passionate about the world of Sonic. Sonic fandom often gets lumped together as all being extremely horny for bizarre Sonic fetish art (and sometimes people even make webseries about that!) and little else, as this part of the fandom was always the most vocal - or at least the most most attention-grabbing (because "Sonic urinals" is simply too weird to look away from). Again - that's not all there is. There are plenty of people who just really love the games, or are extremly progressive inclusive sex-positive types (that you might categorize as "Tumblr-types"), or even some whose main deal is how super-religious they are.

And, of course, there were subsections of the Sonic fandom that were just....reacting to some other parts of the fandom. Namely, fans bucking against the parts of the fandom more into slashfic and sexualizing these characters in ways that weren't reflected in the canon materials - like Tails being gay.

Facebook

Sometime in 2010, a Facebook page was created called 'Tails from "Sonic" is NOT gay!". Don't bother searching for it - the page was deactivated a long time ago, for reasons that will soon become apparent. Most of the content and discussion on the page was general Sonic fandom things - cool fan art, news, and memes or image macros about Tails being heterosexual. And trolling. Lots and lots of trolling (because weird intolerant Sonic fans were some of the ripest targets for trolls online back in the day - just look at the infamous Chris-Chan):

Something changed on January 26th, 2015 - around five years after one fan had created the page because he was so fundamentally offended by the mere implication that fans would draw the beloved character of Tails as a homosexual. If you've seen this (admittedly old) story, then you know what's coming - and you know it's probably worth a re-read. If you've never seen this tale, however, this is going to go in a direction you probably wouldn't have expected. Enjoy...

It's a nice reminder that truly anything is possible - that empathy, growth, and acceptance are a lot more meaningful than spiteful anger, that ignorance can be defeated by love, and that even the worst Sonic fans can find redemption (and get a kickass dog). And if you were wondering if there was a bit more of a post-script to this, there is (sorry for the blurry quality):

I don't know where this person and their brother are now, but I hope they're doing okay.
