Wreck-It Ralph was something truly special - the closest we could ever get to a modern Who Framed Roger Rabbit? for the early days of videogame nostalgia in place of the early age of animation. References, cameos, and some genuinely fun and endearing characters made it something memorable - but also, it managed to capture a specific spirit of arcades and gaming from an authentic-seeming perspective.
But it's doing away with simple gaming references for its sequel - where Ralph and Vanellope are leaving that stuff behind for THE INTERNET:
There's a pretty huge divide between THE INTERNET and 80s/90s gaming - for one, the early days of videogames is a pretty contained and sealed period, while the internet is so, so much bigger, more complicated, and STILL GOING ON. Additionally, gaming was pretty limited in its scope - whereas the internet has completely reshaped society as we know it. To put it simply, the internet is TOO BIG and TOO COMPLICATED to provide the same kind of playground for references - and that's before we get into the fact that the internet is also NOT QUITE the corporate-friendly place the movie would have us believe it is.
So, here's what we think Wreck-It Ralph 2 should ACTUALLY look like...
