Expectations for role-playing games have changed a lot over the years. Whereas fans were once content to gather a pre-set crew of fighters and mages and journey down a narrow path to saving the world from the ultimate evil, things today aren't so simple. There are vast open worlds, endless sidequests and murky moral greys in just about every RPG you play these days. This is in part because the market in general has shifted away from Final Fantasy-style Japanese RPGs and started chasing the "Skyrim model."
