Everything You Need to Know About Civil War So Far
June 17, 2015
Captain America: Civil War
Captain America 3: Civil War
will be released next spring, and it will kick off Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline.
Here's what you need to know about the story: the script is based on the Civil War storyline from the comics. The premise is that after a destructive battle, the United States passes a Superhero Registration Act, which stipulates that superheros reveal their secret identities to the government and agree to work with them. This splits the Avengers down the middle since some members support the act and some don't.
In the comics, Captain America leads the Avengers who oppose to the act while Tony Stark leads those who support it. This rivarly is what spawned the
Captain America/Iron Man Civil War meme
March 25th, 2014 - The Russo Brothers Confirmed
In March of last year, Joe and Anthony Russo, who co-directed
Captain America 2: Winter Soldier
, confirmed they would direct the sequel. The sequel's screenwriters are Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely who wrote the two previous Captain America movies. The Russo brothers said the movie will "wrap up" Captain America's storyline. Whether this means Captain America will pass his title on to another character or he will die remains unclear.
October 2014 - Iron Man and Black Panther Confirmed
In October of last year, Robert Downey Jr. confirmed he'd return as Iron Man, and Chadwick Boseman announced that he would make his first appearance as Black Panther. Boseman also signed up to do 5 movies with Marvel, one of which will be a Black Panther movie.
May 2015 - Full Cast List and Plot Sypnosis Released
More cast details were released in May. The rest of the returning Avengers are Black Widow, Hawkeye, Vision, Scarlet Witch, War Machine, Falcon and Sharon Carter. Ant-Man will appear as the newcomer after his movie comes out this summer.
In terms of villains, Bucky Barnes and Crossbones from the previous Captain American movie will appear as well as General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, the villain from the Edward Norton Hulk movie.
ALSO: Martin Freeman!
It was announced that everybody's favorite Britishman, Martin Freeman, was cast in an unspecified role. Some speculated he would play Everret Ross, a minor character from the comics, but now other sources claim he'll play the British prime minister who demands the Superhero Registration Act. Either way, we know he'll be dryly funny and lovable.
May 2015 - Concept Art Released
journalist, Umberto Gonzalez instagrammed this illustration with the claim that it was official concept art for the upcoming movie. Although this hasn't been confirmed, the art is nice to look at.
It also provides some potential hints about the movie. For one, it suggests the movie will follow the Captain America vs. Iron Man story of the comics. And there's lightning which makes us wonder if Thor will make an appearance after all.
June 2015 - Who Will Play Spider-Man (Again)?
After Sony announced in February they will share Spider-Man with Marvel, Marvel got the fans fired up by revealing that Spidey would appear in
Captain America 3: Civil War
. After the internet combusted into a fiery, hysterical ball of fandom -- similar to how this extender metaphor is combusting and disintegrating into a pile of ashes -- people were suggesting lots of actors, from Donald Glover to Dylan O'Brien.
In June, rumor was that Marvel had cast Asa Butterfield as Peter Parker. Butterfield is known for playing Ender in 2013's
. He's also known for having bigger, prettier eyes than most Disney princesses.
In an unexpected turn of events, Marvel announced on June 23rd that they'd cast Tom Holland as the new Spider-Man, and they'd hired up-and-coming director, John Watts, to direct the 2017 reboot.
June 2015 - No Nick Fury?!
Samuel L. Jackson confirmed in several interviews that he won't be in
. On why he's missing from the cast, he said he "can't figure it out," but he's committed to re-upping his contract and appearing in future Marvel films.
Enjoy some photos taken on set
Filming began in Atlanta in April 2015. In this photo from the set, Captain America looks like he's doing some kick-ass avenging in a crowded city center, and the extras are kicking ass at pretending to be afraid of an invisible enemy.
Black Widow rides her motorcycle because that's the best way to battle bad traffic.
Captain America uses cars as a jungle gym, what else is new?
Captain America appears to jump over people's heads -- or ON their heads? Maybe it's a new battle tactic he's trying out.
Falcon glowers in his full uniform. He's probably grumpy because he's about to be attached to wires, and those harnesses give you wedgies.
Falcon uses wires to fly and bravely withstands terrible wedgies.
Crossbones walks around set in his full costume. He's probably burning to death. (Get it?)
Scarlet Witch drinks from a Fiji water bottle, which is probably the fanciest thing she's ever touched, considering she grew up in war-torn Sokovia.
Captain America is dressed in a smart, black suit for a funeral.
Sharon Carter is also at the funeral, although she's wearing flip flops.
Captain America helps carry the casket.
Who could be in there? Maybe Peggy Carter, Steve Rogers's old love. She is in her nineties at this point, and her death might inspire Captain America to support the Superhero Registration Act.

Instagrammer Esteban posted several videos from set to instagram. The videos show the crew filming of a fight scene between Crossbones and Captain America.
In early May, Sebastian Stan instagrammed a shot of himself throwing a punch. He appears to be wearing his all-black Winter Soldier gear.
In Early June, Stan posted another selfie. This time he was showing off the Winter Soldier's signature long hair and beard.
Okay, Sebastian, your beautiful beard got us. We're excited.
We like you. Do you like us too?
Don't ask me again.
