1. Oak Island

undefined

In 1795, a young man named Daniel McGinnis came across a small island in Nova Scotia and found an odd depression in the ground. Curious, Daniel and a few friends started digging into the hole to see what they would find - and at almost every 10 ft. mark, they found a new layer of logs, along with the occasional layer of charcoal or putty. Eventually, the hole was deep and unworkable enough that McGinnis and his pals had to give up their excavation.

And so it went on - new groups would try to dig down, new traps would be sprung, progress would stop, then someone new would come in and the cycle would start all over again. But after 200 years of near continuous work, no one has discovered the bottom of the pit. Even pre-presidential Franklin Roosevelt was part of a party that attempted to get to the bottom of the pit in 1909 - which, of course, failed, but Roosevelt kept up with news regarding Oak Island for the rest of his life.

All things told, somewhere between $2-$10 million has been spent over the centuries, but recently the search had gone cold, until two brothers from Michigan - Rick and Marty Lagina - who had long been fascinated by Oak Island, decided to search themselves. And last summer, they made a discovery that truly changed the game: a Spanish coin - something that has no business being there - in a nearby swamp, hinting towards what many suspect to be an even larger treasure buried deep in the pit.

2. Devils Hole

undefined

When anything is named after the ruler of Hell, you know you're in for something creepy and weird - thankfully, Devils Hole does not disappoint. It's a geological formation in Nevada, composed of deep caverns and a pool of water at the bottom. Here's the weird thing: we have no idea how deep it is. Here's the other weird thing - well, actually there are a lot of weird things about Devils Hole.

For one, it is the only known habitat of (the appropriately named) Devils Hole pupfish - a species that can only live in a warm, low-oxygen environment. How they actually got there in the first place is something of a mystery - theories of their origin place them as originating any time between a few hundred years ago to tens of thousands of years ago.

But here's the real weird thing - the water deep in the cavernous depths of Devils Hole has been known to ripple when earthquakes occur in completely different parts of the world - the March 2011 earthquake right outside Japan caused observable disruptions in the water, as did earthquakes in China and Mexico at various times.

3. Devil's Kettle

undefined

Hey, speaking of creepy, mysterious locations that just happen to be named after Satan, let's take a quick trip to Devil's Kettle - the nickname for a strange location within Judge C. R. Magney State Park in Minnesota. It refers to a spot where a river splits off into two directions - one flows into a small waterfall, the other into a pothole. The real weird part is no one knows where this pothole actually leads to - the water just seemingly disappears. Researchers have attempted to figure out the ultimate destination of the water with dyes, ping pong balls, and a few other things, all with nothing to show for it.

There isn't even a basic geological explanation for what's happening - while some have theorized that the water ends up in an underground channel that has an outlet near Lake Superior, that would require a fault beneath the surface...and there's no evidence such a fault even exists, let alone is the answer to the mystery.

4. Japan's Underwater Ruins

  undefined

Want to know how mysterious Japan's underwater ruins are? They're so mysterious that they STILL don't have an actual, official name. They're just "Japan's underwater ruins."

They lay at the bottom of the sea, off the coast of Yonaguni - and no one's quite sure what to make of them, to the point where there's still debate whether they're man-made or natural formations. The ruins were first discovered by a diver in 1995 - which, just so you're aware, isn't that long ago. Yet the ruins are supposedly at least 10,000 years old - and contain archs, pillars, stairways, and ledges.

The presiding theory amongst scientists who believe the structures to be man-made is that the ruins are the remnants of the Jomon, a prehistoric group of people who inhabited Japan between 12,000 BC and 300 BC. But rising tides and a shift in sea levels eventually claimed their home, turning it into a modern day Atlantis (the one of myth, not the DC Comics home of Aquaman, although that would be equally cool).

5. CIA Headquarters

undefined

One of the most mysterious places in the world isn't some ancient temple or a hidden fortress or an inexplicable geological curiosity - it's the home of one of the most powerful organizations on the planet: the CIA Headquarters in Langley, VA. And while it has the usual amount of secrecy you would expect from the headquarters of an intelligence operation, there's something right out in the open that has baffled people for years: Kryptos.

Kryptos is an encrypted sculpture that has stood at the CIA Headquarters since 1990 - and still hasn't been decoded fully. Four messages are listed on the piece, but only three have been solved so far:

Message 1:

BETWEEN SUBTLE SHADING AND THE ABSENCE OF LIGHT LIES THE NUANCE OF IQLUSION

Message 2:

IT WAS TOTALLY INVISIBLE HOWS THAT POSSIBLE ? THEY USED THE EARTHS MAGNETIC FIELD X THE INFORMATION WAS GATHERED AND TRANSMITTED UNDERGRUUND TO AN UNKNOWN LOCATION X DOES LANGLEY KNOW ABOUT THIS ? THEY SHOULD ITS BURIED OUT THERE SOMEWHERE X WHO KNOWS THE EXACT LOCATION ? ONLY WW THIS WAS HIS LAST MESSAGE X THIRTY EIGHT DEGREES FIFTY SEVEN MINUTES SIX POINT FIVE SECONDS NORTH SEVENTY SEVEN DEGREES EIGHT MINUTES FORTY FOUR SECONDS WEST X LAYER TWO

Message 3:

SLOWLY DESPARATLY SLOWLY THE REMAINS OF PASSAGE DEBRIS THAT ENCUMBERED THE LOWER PART OF THE DOORWAY WAS REMOVED WITH TREMBLING HANDS I MADE A TINY BREACH IN THE UPPER LEFT HAND CORNER AND THEN WIDENING THE HOLE A LITTLE I INSERTED THE CANDLE AND PEERED IN THE HOT AIR ESCAPING FROM THE CHAMBER CAUSED THE FLAME TO FLICKER BUT PRESENTLY DETAILS OF THE ROOM WITHIN EMERGED FROM THE MIST X CAN YOU SEE ANYTHING Q ?

And here's the encrypted 4th message:

If you're able to solve it, Dorkly will send you a free t-shirt! Also, you will have uncovered one of the most persistent and strange mysteries of the last century, but mainly the t-shirt thing.
