While we're obsessing over the rise and fall (and more fall, and even further fall) of the "Twitch Plays Pokemon" stream, another meme has taken hold of Japan. Born of geek culture, Valentine's Day, and the polar vortex, it's a veritable perfect storm of internet exploitability.
It all started with a news report about the extreme winter weather that's been hitting Tokyo. The reporter stops a young couple to ask about the snow and the umbrella wielding man answers "being in the snow with my lover like this envelops me in a special feeling. I like it."
It is important to know that this statement sounds JUST as corny in Japanese, if not moreso, in fact, public displays of affection are very rare and are often a source of public humiliation. This screenshot spread on twitter after being posted by an Attack on Titan parody account. There's something about the clueless sincerity of the guy, and the woman's all-too-real reaction of someone who knows that she's on national television that made the image stick and within minutes artists across the internet were making fanart of their favorite anime characters reenacting the scene:
Not long after that, videogame characters entered the mix:
Eventually, the floodgates opened and literally everything was admitting their "special feeling" for everyone:
If you've ever dated a geek (or been the geek yourself) you'll know that occasional embarrassment comes with the territory. So be careful the next time you want to sound romantic, you may have your words thrown back to you by a thousand reasonably well-drawn Mega Mans.
