In the 2nd season finale of the BBC's hit drama Sherlock, the title character seemingly plummeted to his death as his partner Watson looked on helplessly. The major cliffhanger that ended the episode, however, revealed that Sherlock somehow survived his apparent death - and unscathed, no less. But how did the world's greatest detective fake his own demise? Here are some theories...
Theory 1: Sherlock Used a Body Double
Likelihood: VERY unlikely. Sherlock is shown jumping off of the building, and there is almost no time for him to have an identical twin body rolled out in his place.
Theory 2: Sherlock Didn't Jump At All - Watson Was Under the Influence of the Baskerville Gas
Likelihood: Unlikely. While the gas may have been utilized to help disorient Watson, there was a crowd gathered around the body and numerous other eye witnesses.
Theory 3: Sherlock Landed On a Laundry Pile, Slowed His Pulse To Give a Disoriented Watson the Impression He Had Died, Used His "Homeless Network" To Act As Witnesses, and Had Another Man's Corpse Identified As His Own With the Assistance of Mycroft and Molly
Likelihood: Pretty likely. While there are some gaps, this theory does not require enormous leaps in logic. Really the only question would be how exactly Sherlock stopped his pulse entirely before Watson got to the scene.
Theory 4: Sherlock Is Some Sort Of Regenerating Alien Who Looks Like A British Human
Likelihood: Zero. Really dumb. C'mon guys.
