Article Other Controversial Tweets By Adam Orth

By Andrew Bridgman / April 12, 2013

Last week, Microsoft creative director Adam Orth shared some controversial tweets regarding rumors that Microsoft's new Xbox console would require an active internet connection at all times.

The internet outcry against Orth's dismissive, condescending attitude was immediate, leading to Orth's departure from Microsoft soon after. However, this is not the first instance of Orth taking a controversial stance on Twitter. Below are previous tweets, that for one reason or another never attracted the same level of outrage.

Article The Dorklyst: The 18 Greatest Time Travelers in Videogame History

By Alexander Z. Rogers / April 12, 2013
The Dorklyst: The 18 Greatest Time Travelers in Videogame History - Image 1

Time travel has been a super popular theme in movies, books and games ever since the first time machine was invented in the year of our Lord Zenithox 33270XX, so naturally there have been plenty of virtual heroes zipping through the space-time continuum. Even with so many cool games featuring time travel, these eighteen veteran characters stand out for going the distance in the past, present and future. Their heroic chrono-adventures have taught us all that no matter how far into the past or future we go, bad guys and logic puzzles span across all history.

18. Bernard, Hoagie, Laverne (Day of the Tentacle)

Way back in an earlier epoch VH-1 historians now refer to as "the early '90s", the forward-looking game scientists at LucasArts developed Day of the Tentacle. The point-and-click adventure game followed a guy, a girl, and another guy in their efforts to foil a sentient purple tentacle's plot to take over the world. The course of human and tentacle events leads to each character being stranded in the mansion at a different period of time. The game played around with the unique temporal level structure, allowing the player to eventually switch between the three time periods, trade items, and show how the effects of a change to one period could have puzzle-solving consequences in future areas. The game's quirky sense of humor and cartoony visuals masked an educational journey, as the kids playing learned more about the Founding Fathers than they ever would have at school. For instance, did you know that John Hancock made the first bad Woody Allen impression in recorded history in Maniac Mansion over 200 years ago? Knowledge.

Sadly, the untimely demise of LucasArts means that this series is likely…history. More time-travel wordplay to follow.

My brother just had a kid and named him 'Ocelot', but I just call him 'Revolver' (or 'Lil Revolver'). He doesn't know why I call Ocelot that and keeps telling me I'm weird. Well, as soon as Lil Revolver's old enough, I'll get him Metal Gear Solid and everything should fall into place.

Two summers back, I was playing my first playthrough of Fallout 3. A family friend called and asked if I could babysit his son's hermit crabs while they went on holiday, to which I agreed. He dropped them off and I put their tank next to the TV so that I could get back to Fallout. Skip forward an hour or so, and I've totally forgotten about the hermit crabs. At which point, one of them decides to come out of its shell and see what's happening. Seeing this out of the corner of my eye I assumed (as any sane person would) that I was under attack by rad-scorpions, leading me to press the VATS button, leaving me confused as to why I couldn't find any rad-scorpions.

Article The Dorklyst: The 10 Tastiest Pizzas in Videogame History

By Andrew Bridgman / April 5, 2013
The Dorklyst: The 10 Tastiest Pizzas in Videogame History - Image 9

If you asked a kid what their favorite things were, odds are you'd hear a lot of them say "pizza" and "videogames." Really, most adults would say the same thing – because pizza is (arguably) the best food there is, and videogames are the best things to do while eating food or not eating food. So combining the two seems like a natural fit – and while many have tried to cash in on our collective love of dough combined with sauce and cheese over the years, only a few have done it memorably. These are the 10 Tastiest Pizzas in Videogame History.

10. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

The Dorklyst: The 10 Tastiest Pizzas in Videogame History - Image 1

There's a lot of super weird things going on in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. There's an upside-down castle. There's a goofy librarian sitting by himself in a library filled with ghosts and demons that he doesn't seem to notice. Hell – there isn't even a symphony. But the weirdest thing may be the fact that there are a lot of fast food items popping up around the castle, including "New York style pizza." Given that Castlevania takes place in 1797, it seems unlikely that "New York style pizza" would be readily available in Dracula's castle back then, or even exist at all. But since Dracula does have the wizard (hilariously-named wizard, more specifically) Shaft helping him out, maybe it's possible that time and space have been bent to allow some pizza into the mazelike castle. If you hate unnatural magic powers back then, odds are you too would use them to resurrect Dracula and get a fresh Lombardi's pie.

We have certain rules in my home about shutting off everything after 9 PM because they are the "rules". I dont have a flashlight and my phone's brightness is very dim, so for a while I had to stop reading comics mid-climax of the story. One night, the dreaded 9 PM rule was on attack mode in the middle of Invincible Iron-Man: The Five Nightmares, and I wasn't going to sleep without finishing it. So trying to read it with my awful phone's brightness, I remembered last Christmas I was given a blue lightsaber keychain. I scrambled to find it as quickly as I could. Now when our 9 PM rule is in effect I will always have my blue lightsaber by my side to read my comics like any Jedi, if Jedi read comics.

A few weeks ago, in the Awards Season entry of Pwn Up, I mentioned that my sister's dog "ate" my Nintendo DS Lite. So I thought I'd clarify a few things:

  • The dog is perfectly fine, no problems whatsoever
  • I will be getting a new 3DS for my birthday
  • The game that I had in the DS at the time was unharmed and still works (THANK GOD)
  • My DS was more chewed than actually eaten. I got back the remains to prove it (see picture below)

Article House Sigils For People Who Watch 'Game of Thrones'

By Julia Lepetit and Andrew Bridgman / April 1, 2013
House Sigils For People Who Watch Game of Thrones - Image 1

This ancient and noble house has existed for almost 20 years – but of late, they've become aggressive and warlike towards the other houses, their egos boosted by their superior stores of knowledge and spoilers. After years of solitude, quietly reading books, they have emerged to exert dominance over non-readers. When not complaining about how "Yara" is actually named "Asha" or how Tyrion's scar is all wrong, they keep subtly trying to spoil events that won't happen for another 4 seasons – right now they're giggling about some wedding that involves the color red, but assure their enemies that "oh, don't worry, that's technically not a spoiler."

Historical Note: Younger members of this house were involved in the Potter siege of the Rowling highlands, which lasted nearly a decade.
